We are the team Sustainabeelity Solutions and our aim is to create a system that can monitor the activity of bees at the UTD North Apiary. Our team hopes to accurately monitor the beehive temperature, humidity, and weight in a sustainable way.

About Sustainabeelity

The aim of our project is to create a web-application system that can monitor the activity of bees at the University of Texas at Dallas North Apiary. This website will display graphs showing the changes in different physical properties over a relatively long period of time at regular intervals. This project is trying to meet the need to measure the overall weight, temperature and humidity of the beehive continuously. This information is displayed through easy-to-understand graphs. One of the goals of the project in the long-term is to develop a software system that supports multiple sensors and beehives. Users should be able to monitor the system through any computer connected to the internet.

Project Partner

Our project partner is the UTD (University of Texas at Dallas) Office of Sustainability. The Office of Sustainability focuses on sustaining academic, student engagement, and administrative operations around campus. The Office of Sustainability defines sustainability as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” The mission is to “engage the UT Dallas community as a catalyst and champion for environmental stewardship and social responsibility while fostering a culture of sustainability evident in all aspects of the campus experience.” The office of sustainability has affiliations with many organizations such as the Bee Campus USA, Bicycle Friendly University, Campus Race to Zero Waste, and many other environment-friendly memberships and affiliations. The Smart Beehive Monitoring System is being developed with the intent of monitoring the 2 apiaries, which hold between 12 to 20 hives producing 300lbs of honey each year. UTD has held the Bee Campus USA certification since October 2018, encouraging UTD to be one of the leaders of pollinator protectors on campus.
